Speaking with Alizon

As a palawa woman who, according to school-learned history, is supposedly extinct, I encounter many people who appear to be somewhat terrified by having to engage with the ongoing existence of Australian Indigenous peoples. In my work: Speaking with Alizon 2021, I intertwine histories by using harsh, industrially produced steel wool and a threatening bullet-belt in conjunction with a sensuous cultural material of bull kelp. I speak of the memories of my mother who disappeared and supposedly “travelled away” when I was just a child.
